2006 Oscar nominations are up!
Via Ain't It Cool News. Comments will be in itallics after the noms.
Film
Brokeback Mountain
Crash
Good Night And Good Luck
Munich
Capote
What? They nominated an old David Cronenberg movie over his newest ones? My brain aches like a new flesh organ. The incredibly political nature of the nominations will be great fodder for Stweart to play with, methinks If the Golden Globes are correct, Bareback Mounting, aka Gay Cowboys Eating Pudding shall win best picture
Director:
Ang Lee (Brokeback)
George Clooney (Good Night)
Paul Haggis (Crash)
Bennett Miller (Capote)
Steven Spielberg (Munich)
Spielberg has already one Oscar for a movie involving dead Jews so I guess that's out.
Actor:
Heath Ledger (Brokeback)
Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line)
Terrence Howard (Hustle And Flow)
David Strathairn (Good Night)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote)
Having only seen, out of all these movies, Hustle and Flow, Terrence Howard is getting my vote. If I could vote.
Lady Actor:
Judi Dench (Mrs Henderson Presents)
Reese Witherspoon (Walk The Line)
Felicity Huffman (Transamerica)
Charlize Theron (North Country)
Keira Knightley - (Pride & Prej)
The real question is why Keira Knightly's boobs were not nominated for their role in Domino? I guess that's more of a supporting role, when you think about it.
Supporting Actor:
George Clooney (Syriana)
Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback)
Matt Dillon (Crash)
Paul Giametti (Cinderalla Man)
William Hurt (History of Violence)
I'm suprised that the Oscar voters actually remebered Cinderella Man. Will this be the year that Giametti? Doubtful. Why did Jake Gyllenhaal get the nomination for best supporting actor? It's obvious, he was the bottom.
Supporting Lady Actor:
Rachel Weisz (Constant Gardener)
Amy Adams (Junebug)
Catherine Keener (Capote)
Frances McDormand (North Country)
Michelle Williams (Brokeback)
Animated Feature
Howl's Moving Castle
Corpse Bride
Wallace & Gromit
Holy fuck, Corpse Bride was shit
Screenplay:
Good Night And Good Luck
Capote
Crash
Match Point
The Squid & The Whale
Syriana
Meanwhile, in Japan, the Squid and the Whale has been nominated for best porno involving seafood and fat chicks.
Adapted Screenplay:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
The Constant Gardener
A History Of Violence
Munich
Sin City, the best movie involving testicle rippage EVAR!, not nominated for best adapted screenplay?
Cinematography:
Batman Begins
Brokeback Mountain
Good Night and Good Luck
Memoirs of a Geisha
The New World
I didn't see Memoirs if a Geisha and it screamed "Oscar Bait". I feel vindicated seeing that it wasn't nominated for top awards. Bwa hah hah. Fuck *you*, Rob Marshall! I would have liked to see Sin City get a nomination, but I guess prominant casteration has forced the balls of the Academy voters to ascend into their bodies as a protective measure. Instead, we have a movie where glistening cocks are filmed in lucious technicolour. Very yin yang.
Editing:
The Constant Gardener
Crash
Munich
Walk the Line
Cinderella Man
Even though Domino was shit, it deserves a nod for best editing
Art Direction:
Good Night and Good Luck
King Kong
Memoirs of a Geisha
Pride & Prejudice
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I haven't seen Memoirs of a Geisha, but one of the reviews for the movie made me convinced that it'll win. At one point in the movie, there's a voice over in broken engrish about how the war is coming to Japan. The camera is focused on the water, which slowly turns red. It pans up river and we see the reason. It's a group of geisha, menstuating together in the river, their moon blood turning the water scarlet. Go, ham fisted Hollywood metaphor!
Costume Design:
Memoirs of a Geisha
Walk the Line
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Mrs Henderson Presents

Brokeback Mountain
The Constant Gardener
Memoirs of a Geisha
Munich
Pride & Prejudice
Original Song:
Hustle & Flow ("It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp")
Crash ("In the Deep")
Transamerica ("Travelin' Thru")
Fun fact: did you know that "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" was originally called "Pimping Ain't Easy, But My Girls Are"? DJ Quails, who is fucking street, suggested to the director to change the title. Also up there, a song from a movie about transsexuals a by a singer whose breasts look as fake as bottom level shemale, Dolly Parton.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Cinderella Man
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Sound:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe would have had more pull if they had Brian "fucking cunt!" Cox doing the voice of Aslan.
Sound Editing:
King Kong
Memoirs of a Geisha
War of the Worlds
War of hte Worlds is the only movie this year that actually made you notice sound editing and that's worth a win without a doubt.

War of the Worlds
King Kong's gonna win this one, no contest.

5 Comments:
First off, I'm gonna say right outta the gates that Match Point only getting nominated for screenplay is a fucking travesty and FUCK the Academy up their caviar-eating asses for not paying it's full due.
Brokeback'll win even though it's 2 and a half hours of scenery with no character development, I shit you not. It looked beautiful, Heath Ledger was ok, the script was bullshit and the editor should've been shot. Good Night and Good Luck or Capote are the best on this list.
director: Ang Lee'll win. duh. But again, my vote goes for George Clooney of Bennett Miller. (given the absense of Woody Allen)
Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman all the way. one of the best, most convincing and totally perfect acting jobs I've seen in my life.
Actress: people call Memoirs of a Geisha Oscar bair, but what about North Country. what a piece of gimme attention bull shit. I haven't seen it, but I hear that Felicity Huffman deserves this.
Supporting actor: in regards to your comment Rob, Jake Gyllenhaal is in supporting cause his character is 2-dimensional and secondary. I like Paul Giamatti and he deserved to win last year (and that seems to be how the oscars choose winners. they award someone who should've won years ago for shit they did recently) I'd like it if Clooney got this though too. (of course neither will, brokeback will sweep)
supporting actress: AMY ADAMS!!
Animated Feature: Fuck you Rob, Corpse Bride was NOT shit. It was too long for such a short story, but it was still good. and name a better animated film that isn't already on that list from last year. I saw them, trust me. there weren't any.
Screenplay: MATCH POINT!! or Squid and the Whale actually. that was a terrific movie.
Adapted screenplay: I want A History of Violence to win. of course it won't.
Cinematography is a tough one this year. they ALL *looked* amazing. This is a HELLUVA year for lighting.ha, this is probably one of the strongest categories in terms of quality at this year's Oscars.
Editing: I couldn't begin to guess or choose, not having seen 3 of the 5 films. But Rob, a good editor knows that editing doesn't mean splicing thousands of shots together in a single frame of film. it's flashy, but it causes seizures. Good editing can allow scenes to happen without cutting them to shit to look cool. Ergo... Yeah, no Domino=Good.
Art Direction: King Kong obviously.
Costume Design: From what I hear Mrs. Henderson Presents is CHOCK FULL of boobies. But God is their costume designer, so fuck mrs. henderson. Give that to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Original Score: I have to say, this belongs to Brokeback, and deservedly so. I love the score, it's really great.
song: I don't give a shit.
Makeup: Cinderella man? oh yeah, you made them look beat up and poor! Good for you. in VFS my friend Shirley made her one-day husband look like he had a black eye with some pastels lying around. and he was already poor. Give her an oscar then.
Geez, either of the other two.
sound: WotW or King Kong
Sound editing: I agree with Rob on WotW, but King Kong was good too, and we both know it'll win. That staff the Oscar statue is holding in front of his privates is obscuring the view of his hard-on for Peter Jackson.
visual effects: yeah, King Kong
the rest I've seen none of and have no say, good luck.

Meaning I havent seen Transamerica. I've seen North Country. God it sucked.

Transamerican would have been the best Oscar bait movie *ever* if her son was an ugly retard,

Wow. This may be the first year ever that I have seen all the films up for best picture. I'm doing much better than last year when I had only seen one of them. Anyway, I think Brokeback Mountain is the clear winner in that category, both in terms of what I think will win (gotta keep the Oscar pool in mind) and what I think should win. Brokeback Mountain was one of the best love stories I have seen, had me identifying with the characters, and kept my attention throughout. Munich would be next best, but I think it just tried to do too much for its own good. Crash was too cute, Good Night and Good Luck was bogged down by the relationship element it was forced to include, and Capote had pacing issues.
For director, I think Ang Lee will win. I too would have liked to see Woody Allen here (I didn't even realize that Match Point technically released in 2005 and was thus Oscar-eligible) as that would have made my should decision difficult. As is, I think Lee edges out Clooney.
Philip Seymour Hoffman will and should win best actor. He did a ridiculously amazing job of capturing Truman Captoe.
Felicity Huffman will win best actress - it's a hollywood rule that if you uglify yourself, you will win best actress (see Charlize Theron in Monster). I haven't seen any of the best actress movies, so I can't comment further.
For supporting actor, I'm also going to go with Giamatti on the "should have won in a previous year" rule, though from the movies I've seen, I think this category is a bit weak. Gyllenhall probably has about an equal chance of the winning on the "best picture wins all awards" rule even though I think Lee's direction took him further than his own acting did. Not having seen History of Violence, Clooney would be my pick (and I never though I'd praise his acting).
Supporting actress I've only seen Capote and Brokeback. Both the actresses in those were good, though not amazing. I have no idea who will win and would probably go with Keener for my pick.
Corpse Bride wasn't shit, but was decidedly average. Despite being a Miyazaki fan, I haven't seen Howl's Moving Castle and he's already won, so I'll go with Wallace and Gromit (it's the one I want to win, anyway).
I really want Squid and the Whale to win best screenplay and I think it has a shot as well. It was on of my favorite films I saw last year. I'd be happy with Match Point also.
Huh, I had no idea that Munich was adapted from a book. Anyway, Brokeback Mountain will win. I'd be happy seeing Capote win as well.
Between the first three cinematography nominations (the ones I've seen) I would pick Good Night and Good Luck, but I have no idea which will win this category.
The rest I really have no idea for, but I suspect King Kong will win most places its nominated. Brokeback Mountain will probably win best score.
For Documentary, even though Enron is the only one I've seen, I'd like it to win. It was certainly one of the best put-together movies that I've seen in awhile and should have been nominated for best editing. I've heard good things about Murderball as well, but Enron was just such a well-done experience.

Oh, and Paradise Now will win best foreign film because, you know, the Jews. (And where was 3-Iron on that list?)
